Description:

This learning program is designed to introduce you to the basics of medical terminology. The word cephalgia, which means headache, and the word ophthalmologist, which means eye doctor, may sound like unintelligible medical jargon, but a closer look at their individual components will uncover their meaning. Like a jigsaw puzzle, a medical term is constructed of different parts. Recalling the elements of medical terms can help to identify the difference in meaning between words that appear to be similar, such as enteropathy and enterology. The program provides a brief overview of the history of medical terminology, and outlines the 3 word elements and how these are used to construct medical terms. Key terms that are commonly used in medical practice are reviewed and deconstructed into their key elements in order to illustrate how their meanings can be derived.

Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to:

  • Describe the origins of medical terminology.
  • List and define the 3 word elements used in medical terminology.
  • Identify anatomy terms and their key elements.
  • Identify location and direction terms.
  • Identify pathology terms and their key elements.
  • Identify diagnosis terms and their key elements.
  • Identify therapy terms and their key elements.
