Description:

The digestive tract, also called the gastrointestinal, or GI, tract is a tubular system that involves a number of different organs and tissues. Its main purpose is to break down food into small molecules that can be absorbed by the cells of the body. This learning program begins by examining the underlying tissue architecture of the digestive system before looking at its overall organization and at its individual organs. As you navigate through the program, you will learn about the different digestive organs and their core functions within the body. In addition, you will learn about some of the specialized cell types of the digestive system.

Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to:

  • List the structural layers forming the wall of the GI tract.
  • Recall the structure and function of the peritoneum.
  • Describe the gross structure and placement of the GI organs.
  • Describe the unique tissue structures and cell types found in the GI tract.
