Description:

The endocrine system is a network of glands that secrete hormones to maintain the delicate hormonal balance that is needed for good health. Hormones act as chemical messengers within the body, constantly regulating physiological functions such as digestion, metabolism, sleep–wake cycles, development, growth, and reproduction. Hormones relay information between the different organs and tissues of the endocrine system and other parts of the body. The Understanding the Anatomy of the Endocrine System learning program is designed as an introduction to the endocrine glands and the hormones they secrete. The program begins with an overview of the endocrine glands. It then systematically examines each gland and describes its location, appearance, and any specialized cells the glands may feature. For each gland, the associated hormones are presented along with the body functions they modulate.

Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to:

  • Describe the general function of the endocrine system.
  • Identify the different organs of the endocrine system.
  • List the major hormones of the endocrine system.
