Description:

The body is like a factory; it carries out countless chemical reactions to extract energy and raw materials from food in order to fuel chemical reactions ranging from synthesis of complex molecules to maintenance of body temperature. These chemical reactions are part of the body’s metabolism. Although the body is constantly recycling molecules through its metabolic activities, it also accumulates waste products, foreign substances, and excess minerals. To avoid toxicity and to maintain fluid balance, these must be removed from the body. The urinary system performs this function through the kidneys, which act as elaborate filters to remove these substances from the blood and excrete them in urine. This learning program is designed to introduce you to the anatomy of the urinary system. The program begins with a brief overview of the body’s fluid compartments, the components of the urinary system, and the role of the kidneys in maintaining homeostasis. You will learn about the structures of the kidneys and how they relate to the filtration of the blood. You will then learn about all the different components of the urinary system and about their role in urine elimination.

Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to:

  • List and describe the fluid compartments of the body.
  • List the urinary system’s major structures and their roles.
  • Describe the kidney and its main structures.
  • Describe the cells and structures of the nephron.
  • Describe the blood vessels supplying the kidney.
  • List and order the structures of the urine drainage pathway.
  • List and describe the structures involved in urine elimination.
  • Describe the histology of the structures involved in urine elimination.
  • Explain micturition.
