Description:

The eyes have always captivated the human imagination. They inspire countless songs and poems, speak volumes with a glance, and are considered to be windows both onto the world and into the soul. However, these sophisticated organs are often taken for granted, and many of us think about the architecture of our digital cameras more than that of our own eyes. This learning program will introduce you to the anatomy of the visual system responsible for everything you see. First, you will learn about the accessory structures that support and protect the eyes. You will then explore the structure of the eye itself and come to understand the role played by each part in filtering visual signals and translating them into nerve impulses. Finally, you will trace the pathways these impulses follow to reach the visual centers of the brain where they are interpreted as images of the world around us.

Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to:

  • List and describe the accessory structures of the eye.
  • Describe the gross anatomy of the eye.
  • List and describe the microscopic structures and cells of the retina.
  • Explain the role of the lens in vision.
  • List and describe the nerves and brain regions involved in the visual pathways.
  • Summarize the major visual processing pathways.
