Description:

The Understanding the Anatomy of the Visual System learning program is designed as an introduction to the anatomy of the eye and the neuronal pathways that allow us to interpret visual information captured by the eye. The program begins by exploring the sophisticated structures of the eye itself, including the photoreceptors that are responsible for our perception of shapes and colors. It then follows the neuronal impulses from the eye to the visual centers of the brain where they are interpreted as images of the world around us. Finally, it describes the accessory structures that support and protect the eyes.

Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to:

  • Describe the macroscopic anatomy of the eye.
  • List and describe the microscopic structures and cells of the retina.
  • Explain the role of the lens in vision.
  • List and describe the nerves and brain regions involved in the visual pathways.
  • Summarize the major visual processing pathways.
  • List and describe the accessory structures of the eye.
