Description:

The endocrine system is a network of glands that secrete hormones to maintain the delicate hormonal balance that is needed for good health. Within the body, hormones act as chemical messengers, constantly regulating physiological functions such as digestion, metabolism, sleep–wake cycles, development, growth, and reproduction. Hormones relay information between the different organs and tissues of the endocrine system and other parts of the body. Understanding the Physiology of the Endocrine System is a learning program designed as an introduction to hormones, hormone receptors, and the processes they modulate, such as maintaining the delicate equilibrium of the body’s internal environment. The program begins with an overview of hormones and then discusses important features of hormone signaling, hormone regulation, and hormone receptors. In addition to these general principles, the specific physiological processes that are regulated by certain hormones will also be covered.

Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to:

  • Summarize the characteristics of hormones.
  • Explain the general features of hormone signaling.
  • List and describe the types of hormone receptors.
  • Describe the mechanisms of hormone regulation.
  • Describe the physiological effects of various hormones.
  • Discuss organs and tissues outside of the endocrine system that also synthesize and release hormones.
