Description:

The nervous system is a complex system of our body that maintains homeostasis and is responsible for our perceptions, behaviors, memories, and movements. The property of nerve cells to generate electrical signals enables the nervous system to communicate quickly with body tissues and to regulate and coordinate body activities. This learning program is designed to introduce you to the physiology of the nervous system. The program begins with an overview of the function of the nervous system, in particular that of the brain, spinal cord, and autonomic nervous system (ANS). You will then learn about the electrophysiology of the nervous system and how neurons use their electrical properties to transmit information from one cell to another. You will also learn about the various neurotransmitters secreted by neurons and how they are involved in signal transmission.

Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to:

  • Explain the function of the nervous system.
  • Describe the physiological basis of neural communication.
  • Identify the different classes of neurotransmitters.
  • Differentiate the signaling pathways in neural communication.
