Description:

The Understanding the Physiology of the Respiratory System learning program is designed as an introduction to the main processes of the system that transfers oxygen from the external environment to the blood when we breathe. The program begins with an overview of the physical laws underlying the mechanics of ventilation as well as their effects on the flow of air in and out of the lungs. The program then covers the principles of gas exchange, which is the exchange of carbon dioxide with oxygen that occurs in the lung. The special properties of hemoglobin molecules that allow red blood cells to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide are reviewed next. Finally, the program discusses how breathing is regulated to meet the body’s changing demands for oxygen during different physical activities.

Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to:

  • Describe the process of ventilation.
  • Explain the factors that affect the flow of air through the respiratory system.
  • Explain gas exchange in the body.
  • Describe the role of hemoglobin.
  • Discuss the regulation of breathing.
