Description:

The Understanding the Physiology of the Skin learning program is designed as an introduction to the physiology of the organ that separates the body’s internal environment from the external one. This program begins by reviewing the many functions of the skin, such as protection, heat regulation, and the senses of touch and pain. It then discusses skin growth and age-related skin changes, both those seen on the surface of the skin and those accumulating on a cellular level. Finally, the program discusses how skin is repaired after injuries like wounds and burns.

Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to:

  • List the protective functions of the skin.
  • Describe how the skin contributes to thermoregulation.
  • Describe the role of the skin in sensation.
  • Describe the role of the skin in excretion and absorption.
  • Describe the importance of vitamin D synthesis by the skin.
  • Describe the process of skin, hair, and nail growth.
  • Identify the effects of aging on the skin.
  • Explain the causes of skin injury and how the skin repairs itself.
